Oral hygiene Day- What your mouth is trying To Tell You?

Oral Hygiene Day is observed every year by the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP), and various other institutions to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. G B Shankwalkar, the doyen of Indian Periodontics and founder of the Indian Society of Periodontology, who was born on 1st August.

Every year, ISP, along with its members, dental associations such as the Indian Dental Association (IDA) and its state branches, Rotary clubs, dental colleges all over the country and Private organizations celebrate the Oral hygiene day on 1st August. Its primary objective is to make people aware of oral hygiene and its importance and to curb the bothersome trend of neglect which has been one of the main causes of dental diseases.

Oral hygiene: A window to your overall health

Most of us don’t know that our overall health and happiness is closely linked to our dental health — or that problems in the mouth can have an effect on the rest of the body?  The 18th-century French paleontologist and comparative anatomist George Cuvier stated: “Show me your teeth, and I will tell you who you are”. The guy possessed one of the finest minds in history. He was onto something.

Defend yourself by learning more about the relationship between your oral health and overall health. During the past few years, physicians and periodontal researchers have collected a trove of evidence showing that not only can the teeth and gums act as a barometer for how well the body is doing; they may directly affect the health of the brain, heart, metabolism and even reproductive organs.

Exaggeration? Fair enough, maybe. But look at the details: The mouth is the human body’s most common entry point for infection, yet all of us have almost ignored it. Although every medical condition has some kind of manifestation in the mouth, medical schools basically taught that the body began at the tonsils until last decade. It is so fitting to call the mouth the ‘black hole’ of the body because it’s a mystery to most medical folks.

Do you ever notice that when you floss or brush, your gums bleed? Then, you should know that is a sign of gum disease. Bleeding gums also shows how simple it is for bacteria to enter the bloodstream and travel through your body wreaking havoc. In fact, it is well documented that gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer (including pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, oesophageal cancer etc) and other serious problems. Low-birth-weight in babies and Pregnancy complications has also been linked to gum disease.

Periodontal concerns are usually linked with cardiovascular diseases, and the two conditions share a few key risk factors, such as obesity, smoking, and deprived nutritional intake. It is estimated that up to 91% of people suffering from heart conditions are also dealing with periodontal infections. Diabetes is the other major area of oral-systemic research. Several studies reveal that those who’ve got gum disease are more likely to develop or have diabetes; the worse the gums, likely the worse is diabetes. Farther down from the mouth, we can find deflating figures for erectile dysfunction. A 2013 Turkish study embraced the ED-PD connection strongly and stated that you have up to a three times greater chance of developing ED if you’ve got PD.

It’s high time to start thinking of the mouth as an ecosystem of bacteria that can drive health and sickness, similar to how we now view the gut.  Your dentist has been irritating you to brush twice a day and floss daily-- and while those habits, together with standard cleanings; regular checkups are vital care components to keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Oral Hygiene Day is on August 1, and it’s time to “Live Mouth Smart” by practising good oral health. After all, our choppers do more than help us chow down. They help us to talk, kiss, smile, breathe—and other gestures we oftentimes take for granted.
